27 Jan - Family Literacy Day 201...

WCS celebrated Family Literacy Day with a school-wide read event, and pj's and books! For our school-wide read, students enjoy hearing the story of Sylvester and the Magic Pebble by William Steig. After the story, students thought about the theme of "Just Believe" and the theme of the storybook. They then created a rock saying what they believed. Thank you to the NWT Literacy Council for their support of our school-wide read.
We also held a Family Literacy Evening on January 19. Our "Journey To Learning" event was well attended and families enjoyed different literacy activities in different countries of the world. (view photos)

11 Jan - Sir John Celebration -...

We celebrated Sir John A's big day by going through the Sir John A Day website video lectures and resource materials. We also had a special whole school announcement to let everyone know what a special day it was. We culminated our learning with a tea party complete with iced tea and treats and period costumes. We then viewed part 8 of "Canada: a People's History". We learned a great deal about Sir John A and now have a better understanding of both the man and his contributions to Canadian society. 9 Dec - Grade 3 Monks - Service...

Mrs. Monks' class is working very hard on their service project! They have decided to make some quilts for the families so severely affected by the fires in Slave Lake, AB. Students learned how devastating the fire was and we talked about how a quilt is made with love and because of this give comfort. One student declared that the quilt pieces even smelled like love! Not only are the students learning about service, care and compassion; they are also learning to follow instructions, increasing their literacy and learning about math. (view photos)

25 Nov - Fete de la Sainte-Cathe...

In celebration of la fête de la Sainte-Catherine (November 25), Grade 3 French students made colourful hats.  Once hats were made, we danced, sang and displayed our hats.
As part of the celebration, students learned about the tradition of the Saint Catherine’s day ball in Québec, Acadia and France, where single women under 25, “les Catherinettes”, would hope to meet a potential spouse while wearing their specially decorated hat.
